Five Temptations of a CEO Case Study
Situation/Challenge
Best-selling business author and management consultant Patrick Lencioni was disappointed in the amount of media coverage being garnered by his publisher’s in-house PR department. So he approached me to expand the focus of media coverage beyond traditional book reviewers for his first business book, Five Temptations of a CEO.
Process/Solution
I was able to open up new categories for Lencioni, securing traditional business media interviews based on Lencioni’s knowledge of existing CEOs in the news, including the nation’s most visible Chief Executive at the time, Bill Clinton. I also helped secure media interviews to support Lencioni on a multi-city book signing tour, focusing on four key markets: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston and Colorado.
Results
The Los Angeles tour resulted in a full-page profile in Entrepreneur.
In Colorado, Lencioni appeared on the CBS Morning News and KTLK’s Business for Breakfast show. On the trip back to San Francisco, I also set appointments in a stopover in Utah, garnering coverage in both of the state’s largest newspapers, the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News.
In Boston, interviews with Lencioni led to a full-page story in CIO Magazine, an article in the Boston Herald, and two live radio appearances, Common Ground on WZLX and Boston Life on WMJX-FM.
I set up an interview with the author’s home city paper, The San Francisco Examiner/Chronicle, which sported a full-page photo of Lencioni on the cover of the Career section-the section that wrapped the entire paper that Sunday-with the interview inside.
He was also interviewed by USA Today, which used his expert commentary in a story on CEOs, and by Success Magazine, which later published a full interview with Lencioni, as well as a quiz he wrote exclusively for the publication about leadership.
